Father killed day after child's birth

A man has been killed in a road accident in south Armagh, less than 24 hours after his wife gave birth to their second child.

Barry Patrick McAnulty, 29, of Amakane Road in Camlough, died in the accident which involved a van and a lorry carrying beer kegs.

It happened at the Newtown Road in Camlough at 0945 GMT on Friday.

Mr McAnulty was the driver of the van. He had been married with two children.

Mr McAnulty's wife had just given birth to a baby girl on Thursday and is still in hospital.

The couple's other child, a girl aged two, was in the van at the time of the accident.

She was taken to hospital but was not physically injured.

They are bewildered by how happy they all were last night in the hospital with his wife and his new baby

Father Robert McKenna

Mr McAnulty had been taking his daughter to her grandmother's house before travelling to work.

Local priest Father Robert McKenna said the community had been left "bewildered" by the tragedy.

"He was in with his wife last night and together they decided on the name for the new baby, so they had that joy before he met his maker," said Fr McKenna.

He said Mr McAnulty's parents and family were devastated by the news.

"They are totally shattered," he said. "They are bewildered by how happy they all were last night in the hospital with his wife and his new baby and there they are now, just shattered, shattered."
