London critics back Billy

Flying high: Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell

Box office hit Billy Elliot has been nominated for nine prizes at this year's London Film Critics' Circle awards.

The film's star, 14-year-old Jamie Bell, is up for the British newcomer award, as is director Stephen Daldry.

Julie Walters, who played his dance teacher, is nominated for best British actress, while Gary Lewis, who plays his father, is nominated for best British actor.

Set in the 80s, the story about a boy from an English mining village who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer has been a hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

Last month the movie, co-produced by BBC Films, was nominated for two Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles.

There are 15 categories in all for the awards, to be held at the Savoy Hotel in the West End of London next month.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is also nominated for best British actor for his role in Titus, alongside Ralph Fiennes, who is nominated for his part in The End Of The Affair.

Kate Winslet and Emily Watson are also nominated for best British actress.

International nominees include Michael Douglas, Jim Carrey and Russell Crowe for best actor.

The awards, which are in their 21st year, are being held in aid of the National Society For The Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
