Concern over India food surplus
Leaders of the governing BJP in India are meeting today to discuss the concerns of agriculturalists.
Farmers allege that the government run Food Corporation of India has not been buying grain in a uniform manner across the country. India had a record harvest of 206-million tonnes of food grain last year and reserve stocks hit an all-time high of 40-million tonnes. Correspondents say the BJP risks losses at the polls in four states because farmers feel the administration has not done enough to buy surplus wheat and rice.
