Strike call after West Bengal clashes
The main opposition party in the Indian state of West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has called for a 12-hour strike on Friday after clashes with supporters of the ruling Marxist party.
The rally had been addressed by Trinamool leader and federal Railways Minister, Mamata Banerjee, who was reportedly hurt in the foot during the clashes. Police say rivals sets of supporters hurled bricks, damaged vehicles and set fire to nearby houses. Tensions in Midnapore have been rising, with the Communists and the TMC locked in a struggle for control in marginal constituencies. In federal elections in 1999, the TMC made some inroads in West Bengal and the ruling front's tally of seats was reduced. State elections are due to be held in West Bengal in the first half of this year. |
