Chelsea sign French star

Desailly meets the French prime minister this week

Marcel Desailly is the latest international superstar to sign for Chelsea.

The French international, who can play in defence or midfield is joining from AC Milan for £4.6m.

His arrival comes a day after manager Gianluca Vialli paid £2.2m for Barcelona's Spanish international Albert Ferrer, and also follows the capture of Italian Pierluigi Casiraghi from Lazio earlier in the summer.

The signing of Desailly took place at the World Cup centre in Paris.

Desailly will also link up with international colleague Frank Leboeuf at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea beat off interest from a number of other clubs to land the 29-year-old who has won 41 caps for his country and is likely to play a big part in their World Cup campaign.
