Judges at the international tribunal for Rwanda have agreed new procedures to speed up the trials of those suspected of leading the genocide of 1994.

Judges will have more power to control the questioning of witnesses and will be able to consider written evidence.

The United Nations tribunal, which was set up three years ago in Tanzania, has been criticised for being too slow.

It secured its first conviction last month, when the former Rwandan prime minister, Jean Kambanda, pleaded guilty to genocide charges.
