Special UN conference on illegal drugs continues in New York

The special United Nations conference on illegal drugs is entering its second day at the UN headquarters in New York.

At the opening on Monday President Clinton called for a joint approach to combat drug trafficking, without recriminations between producing and consuming nations.

President Clinton also held a separate meeting with the Mexican President, Ernesto Zedillo -- who had objected to what he called infringements of Mexican sovereignity by agents from the United States.

Brazil's president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, announced the creation of a national anti-drug department to coordinate Brazil's fight against illegal drugs.
