Hong Kong was brought to a standstill today by a torrential rain storm.

Schools, businesses, government offices and the courts were closed and the opening of the stock exchange postponed.

Hospitals were open only for emergency cases.

The authorities issued warnings of floods and landslides and advised the territory's six-and-a-half-million residents to stay at home.
