Dana International pleads innocent

Dana jublilant at her Eurovision win

Dana International, the Israeli transsexual singer who won this year's Eurovision song contest, has pleaded innocent to charges that she attacked a spectator and a waitress at a performance two years ago.

The singer, who appeared before a magistrates' court in Rehevot, near Tel Aviv, denied disorderly conduct after being accused of throwing a bottle of mineral water at a spectator's head.

Her next hearing will be in about six months, according to court spokesman Moshe Gorali.

Dana International, who was known as Yaron Cohen until undergoing a sex change operation five years ago, won the 25-nation Eurovision song contest in May with the song "Diva."

While her victory prompted celebrations in Tel Aviv, she has been strongly criticised by Orthodox Jews, who called her a disgrace to the Jewish state.

One government minister described her as an abomination.
