UK Politics It's still 'good' to talk Mobiles must conform to EU standards The government has decided not to impose a compulsory health warning on mobile phones. President of the Board of Trade Margaret Beckett said in a Commons written reply that she was aware of public concern over the effects of exposure to mobiles' electromagnetic fields. But as UK mobile phones are within exposure limits definded by the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), she said there were no plans to issue health warnings. "Advice on the health implications of exposure to electromagnetic fields from mobile telecommunications equipment is discussed with the NRPB and also with the Department of Health," said Mrs Beckett. "The exposure guidelines of the NRPB for fields associated with mobile telecommunications equipment are based on well-established thermal effects. "NRPB's view is that mobile phones currently used in the UK comply with the recommended exposure limit. There are no plans to require mobile phones to have a health warning." However, Mrs Beckett added that phones must be throughly checked to ensure they comply with the EU directive on electromagnetic compatibility before they are connected to any mobile network. |
