'Solid' support for fire strike

Essex fire crews are striking against job cuts

Firefighters in Essex have gone ahead with a planned four-hour strike in protest at job cuts.

The Fire Brigades' Union reported a solid show of support for the action on Monday.

Barry Downey of the FBU tells BBC News 24 why Essex firefighters have opted to strike
Emergency cover, in the form of Army Green Goddesses, was drafted in for nine hours to deal with 999 calls during the stoppage, which lasted for an entire shift.

The strike was called in protest at plans to cut 16 jobs among fire staff in the county.

Firefighters are also concerned that budget cuts will lead to a poorer service. Barry Downey, of the FBU, objected to plans to scrap equipment such as aerial platforms.

"I don't think there are grounds to say that just because we are per head on of the best funded services in the country, that's a reason to cut us back," he said.

Although the strikers had agreed to go back to work at 2pm, the council insisted they must forfeit the whole nine-hour shift.

Union leaders say firefighters across the UK could back the dispute if Essex Fire Authority suspends or sacks any of the strikers.

The union has threatened further stoppages on June 12 and 15.
