Chilean church receives information about missing

The Roman Catholic Church in Chile says it has received information relating to some of the more than one-thousand people who disappeared during military rule under General Pinochet.

A spokesman for the Episcopal Conference, Enrique Palet, told the BBC that the reports would be passed to the judicial authorities.

He added that some of the information came from former officers.

Earlier this year, the Chilean army reached agreement with human rights groups that any military informers would remain anonymous in return for information relating to missing people.

The collected data is due to be handed to President Ricardo Lagos by January the sixth.
