Rwandese militias surrender
The Rwandan army says exiled militiamen who fled the country after the 1994 genocide are continuing to surrender. A presidential adviser, Charles Kayonga, told the Associated Press newsagency that the latest group of about one-hundred rebels had surrendered on Monday on the northeastern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Colonel Kayonga said the leader of the group, a former Rwandan army major Laurent Kitanishatse had given himself up today at Rwerere, near the border town of Gisenyi. Rwanda says more than eight-hundred Hutu militiamen have far surrendered in the past six months. Correspondents say the Rwandan army which is backing Congolese rebels fighting the government of President Laurent Kabila, has stepped up its military operations against Hutu militiamen in recent months.
