Mitterrand son to stay in jail
The appeals court in Paris has rejected a request by lawyers for Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, the son of the late French president, for his release on bail from prison. Mr Mitterrand was detained last week, as investigations continue into accusations against him of complicity in illegal sales of Russian weapons to Angola in the early 1990s. He's admitted being paid almost two-million dollars by a company that sold weapons to the Angolan government, but has denied any wrongdoing. At the time of the alleged offences, Mr Mitterrand was his father's special adviser on African affairs. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
