Man serious after gang attack
Strathclyde Police HQ
Police would not say what weapons were used
A man is seriously ill in hospital after he was attacked by a gang of teenagers in what police believe was an unprovoked assault.

Detectives said the 34-year-old was targeted as he made his way along Tay Street in the Bow Farm area of Greenock about 2130GMT on Monday.

The six-strong gang left the victim with serious multiple injuries.

The attackers were armed, but police have not disclosed the type of weapons used.

The man, who has not been named, was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Witness plea

Staff today described his condition as "serious but stable".

Detectives hunting the attackers are keen to speak to a couple who were seen pushing a buggy in the area at the time as they believe they could hold vital clues to the identities of the gang members.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "There are no descriptions of the persons responsible for the attack other than they were male and approximately 16 to 17 years old.

"One of the youths was thought to have been wearing a white tracksuit. They were all last seen running towards the stairs in Tay Street that lead to Tasker Street, Greenock."
