Brazil orders probe after submarine sinks
The Brazilian Navy has begun an investigation after the country's largest submarine sank while undergoing routine repairs. The vessel, the Tonelero, went down in Rio de Janeiro with four torpedoes on board. Officials said there'd been a failure in the hydraulic system. Nine crew on board escaped unharmed. The Tonelero is the oldest of Brazil's five submarines. It was built in Britain and bought by the Brazilians in 1977. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
