Monday, June 8, 1998 Published at 06:29 GMT 07:29 UK World: S/W Asia Twelve die in Hyderabad Indian police in Andhra Pradesh say that twelve people have now died in the communal violence which broke out on Friday between Hindus and Muslims in the state capital, Hyderabad. The authorities say the situation is still tense and some parts of Hyderabad remain under curfew after police opened fire to disperse rioters. The Hyderabad police commissioner, RP Singh, said that after an appeal to the Indian federal government by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandra Babu Naidu, more anti-riot police had been brought in from Delhi and deployed in the city. The violence began with a protest by Muslims against a pamphlet which they said contained derogatory references to Islam. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
