Calcutta officially renamed Kolkata

The Indian government says it has approved a change in the name of Calcutta, in the east of the country, to Kolkata.

The metropolis, which is the state capital of West Bengal, is the third of India's four main cities to reject its British colonial name.

Bombay and Madras have already gone back to their original names of Mumbai and Chennai, but the federal capital, Delhi, has not changed. Calcutta was the capital of British-ruled India until 1911.
