Argentine bombing: suspect extradited

Switzerland has extradited a key suspect in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre in Argentina in which eighty-six people died.

The extradition of Wilson dos Santos -- a Brazilian national -- was requested by the Argentine authorities who said he'd given false testimony about the attack on the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association.

Just days before the bombing, Mr dos Santos had visited Argentine and Brazilian consulates in Italy to warn of a planned terrorist action saying he'd been told of the plans by his Iranian girlfriend.

He later retracted the story, however, saying he'd made it all up.

Mr dos Santos was arrested in Switzerland in March at the request of Interpol.

His extradition follows assurances from Buenos Aires that his human rights will be respected. Israel has blamed Iranian-backed guerillas for the blast although Tehran denies the charges.
