The incident is now being investigated by both the police and fire service.

A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade said: "At approximately 2300 hours last night an appliance from Broadway was proceeding to a car fire when it was involved in a road traffic accident in High Street.

"The brigade is currently conducting its own investigation regarding the incident and at present we cannot comment further." The brigade refused to say whether the driver was still at work.

The driver is due to appear before Evesham Magistrates Court next month.
