US 'agrees UN payment cuts' |
|
| The US ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Holbrooke, says there has been a breakthrough on a preliminary agreement on UN finance. The United States is reported to be ready to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in arrears in return for a cut in its payments, while other countries have agreed to shoulder more of the burden of financing the UN. A personal donation to the UN from media magnate Ted Turner of $34m helped seal the accord. The BBC's Stephen Cviic reports from New York. |
