OAU praises Sudan election conduct
A delegation from the Organisation of African Unity has praised the handling of parliamentary and presidential elections in Sudan. The delegation commended the way that the Sudanese election commission had organised the polling and the opportunities given to presidential candidates to present themselves through the media. Although there were a number of challengers to President Omar Al-Bashir, the election was boycotted by the main opposition parties and the turn out was reported to be very low. Counting of votes is continuing and the results will be announced on Monday. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
