Stewart latest South African victim

Cork took the final South African wicket with a reflex catch

England have lost three batsmen, risking wickets in a run chase, as they attempt to build a lead big enough to defend on the final day of the first Test at Edgbaston,

Mark Butcher was the first to go, lbw to Shaun Pollock, when he had scored 11. Umpire David Shepherd had no hesitation about the wicket.

The players broke for tea shortly afterwards, and no sooner were they back on the field than Nasser Hussain was on his way back to the pavilion.

He was out for a duck, again lbw, this time to Allan Donald, who was failing to find his rhythm.

Although he was conceding runs and giving away plenty of extras, he also accounted for Alec Stewart who had scored freely since coming on.

Stewart had hit 28, including some fine shots, when he was clean bowled by Donald.

The ball kept low, but it looked as though the England captain was attempting to out think the bowler and got it wrong.

South Africa have been appealing for everything, and Mike Atherton was lucky to escape an lbw shout off the bowling of Pollock.

However their bowlers are again being careless. Whereas England gave away just seven runs in extras during the entire South African innings, by the time the tourists had bowled 25 overs they had gifted England 22 runs in extras.

England need to score quickly if they are going to get a big enough lead to defend on Monday, after a stubborn seventh-wicket partnership between Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener.

The pair put on 104, taking South Africa well past the follow-on, scoring freely with some fluent stroke-play.

Dominic Cork ended South Africa's innings with a fine instinctive catch to dismiss Donald off his own bowling.

However quickly England bat on Sunday, their efforts to win the match could be stymied by the weather, as Monday's forecast is for rain.
