One man died and a second was left seriously injured after being hit by a train.

The incident took place near Bargeddie Railway Station in Lanarkshire on Friday.

A passenger train struck David McLaughlin, 22, from Baillieston, at about 1650 GMT.

Strathclyde Police said it appeared that Mr McLaughlin and his 27-year-old companion had been walking westwards on the line when the accident happened.

The emergency services were called out after the alarm was raised by the train driver.

Mr McLaughlin was found to be dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as serious but stable.

The train crew and passengers were not injured in the incident.

Inquiries into the accident were continuing and a police spokesman said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Alternative transport was provided for all passengers on the train, the police spokesman added.
