Mexican president examines migrants, drugs situation

The Mexican president, Vicente Fox, is visiting Mexico's border with the United States to examine the conditions under which Mexican workers return from the US.

Correspondents say Mexican migrants have long accused their country's border guards of delays, extortion and harassment.

Mr Fox, who travelled to the border region on Thursday, has also promised to step up the fight against drug-trafficking.

He said he planned to station up to two-thousand more police officers in Tijuana, the home to one of the most powerful drug-trafficking organisations, the Arellano Felix cartel, from January.

He also said moves to recruit more agents for the federal preventive police force were underway.
