UK Christmas travel update

Many travellers have avoided creating a Christmas crush on roads, rail and coaches by listening to warnings to book early and stagger their journeys over the weekend.

But traffic hotspots on Sunday - the final shopping day before Christmas - are expected to be near major shopping centres and on busy motorways, where road traffic is expected to be 10% heavier due to rail disruption.

Scotland

All rail services to and from Scotland are facing disruption.

There are patches of fog and ice and some snow across parts of Scotland, and drivers are warned to be extra cautious.

North East
Northern Spirit, which runs the Trans-Pennine express services from Liverpool and Manchester through Yorkshire to Newcastle and Sunderland says there is no need to book.

Motorists are warned to expect delays on the M5 and M6 motorways.

Drivers in Yorkshire, especially the Pennines and North York Moors, are warned of difficult driving conditions caused by fog.

On Sunday, there are likely to be delays on the A1 near Gateshead as shoppers queue for the Metro Centre.

North West

Northern Spirit, which runs the Trans-Pennine express services from Liverpool and Manchester through Yorkshire to Newcastle and Sunderland says there is no need to book.

Virgin trains have cancelled some services from Manchester to London Euston.

There could be delays on the M61 at Junction 15, and the M6 between Junctions 20-21, caused by roadworks.

The M60 is expected to become busy near Junction 7 on Sunday as shoppers queue for the Trafford Centre.

Midland Mainline say 75% of services are fully booked and those wishing to travel should book in advance.

Drivers in Lincolnshire are warned of difficult driving conditions caused by fog.

There are roadworks on the M5 between Junctions 1-3.

South East
The A22 Godstone Road in Whyteleafe, Surrey, is flooded and impassable between Hayes Lane and the Whyteleafe roundabout, to the north of junction 6 of the M25.

Some holes are appearing in the road surface, so it could be closed for some time to come.

There are also expected to be delays on the M2 in Kent and the M4 to the south-west of England.

The AA says the M1 northbound through Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire is expected to a "major hotspot".

Delays are expected on Sunday near the Bluewater shopping centre on the M25 Junction 2.

Roadworks on the M40 between Junctions 3-4 may also cause delays.

Victoria Station is expected to be busy with demand for coaches outstripping supply.

South West
Delays are possible on the A303 at Mapperton near Wincanton, Somerset, following an accident involving a petrol tanker.

There could be delays around Junction 17 of the M5 on Sunday, as shoppers queue for the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre.
