Austria ups holocaust compensation offer
The Austrian government has revised its offer to compensate thousands of survivors of the Nazi holocaust. During a meeting in Washington with representatives of the American government and victim support groups, Austrian negotiators offered an additional one-hundred-and-fifty-million dollars to Jewish survivors and others who suffered Nazi persecution in Austria. The new money is being provided by the private sector and will take the total Austrian compensation package to nearly one-billion dollars. All sides agreed that more progress was needed -- a further round of talks will take place in Vienna next month . From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
