Mexico City ends pollution alert

Officials in Mexico City have lifted a one-day pollution alert after rain helped clear the air.

On Saturday, cars with licence plates ending with odd numbers were not allowed on the road; on Sunday however, all cars will be allowed back.

Despite the partial lifting of the smog, the city is still affected by smoke from forest fires in the surrounding mountains.

On Friday, United States environmental officials who had visited the Chimalapas nature reserve said the fires had caused the worst environmental damage of its kind that they had seen.
