Amnesty accuses naval officers of torture

The human rights group Amnesty International has alleged that members of the Sri Lankan navy tortured and killed two young Tamil men in the east of the country.

A statement from Amnesty International said there had been continuous reports of human rights violations by the navy in the eastern district of Trincomalee for some time.

They added that as far as they knew not a single naval officer had been arrested yet.

The human rights organisation also complained that members of the navy had been threatening local villagers in Gopalpuram who protested against the killings.

There has been no comment from the Sri Lankan navy on the report.
