Sunday, June 7, 1998 Published at 02:45 GMT 03:45 UK World: Middle East Tehran mayor corruption case begins ![]() The case involving Mr Karbaschi could stir up turmoil The mayor of Tehran, Gholam Hossein Karbaschi, has appeared in court for the start of his controversial corruption case which has stirred deep political turmoil in Iran. In the open courtroom packed with the press and public, the mayor vehemently denied the charges.
The country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, intervened to calm the political storm by ordering Mr Karbaschi's release.
The mayor played an important part in the landslide election victory of the popular reformist President Mohhamad Khatami in 1997.
The BBC Middle East correspondent says it was thought that the affair, which sharply polarised the conservative and moderate trends within the Islamic regime, might be quietly brushed under the carpet following his release.
It is not known how long the case will last. |
