Mexico, Peru praised for democracy gains

A worldwide report on democracy and human rights has praised Mexico and Peru for what it says are large strides towards freedom.

The report, from the US-based organisation, Freedom House, singled out the election of the Mexican President, Vicente Fox, for bringing to an end seventy years of virtual one-party rule in the country.

The document also pointed to Peru where it said the resignation of President Alberto Fujimori had been followed by gains for political freedom and the rule of law.

There was criticism for Venezuela, however, where President Hugo Chavez' moves against trade unions earned the country a black mark.

Elsewhere, Cuba was cited as one of eleven nations in which citizens are denied even the most basic freedoms.
