BJP and allies make strides in Indian by-elections

With most results declared from parliamentary and assembly by-elections held in India last Wednesday, two of the three parliamentary seats contested have been won by the governing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies.

In the state assembly elections, Congress won sixteen of the fifty-one in contention, doing particularly well in Maharashtra and Orissa.

The BJP took eleven, including three of the seven seats at issue in Uttar Pradesh.

Two results are still awaited.
