Vietnam search for danger bombs

Vietnamese troops are conducting a search for unexploded bombs dropped by an American bomber during the Christmas offensive ordered by President Richard Nixon twenty-eight years ago.

The bombs fell on a northern suburb, Soc Son, of the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

About twenty-five of the five-hundred kilogram bombs failed to explode.

Officials say they launched the search because of concerns expressed by local people after six of the devices had been unearthed.

Army experts are defusing the bombs as they are located.

Explosions caused by bombs and landmines scattered across Vietnam during the war continue to kill a large number of people each year.
