IMF readmits Yugoslavia

As the new government in Yugoslavia continues its attempts to restore the country's place in the international community, the International Monetary Fund has admitted it as a member.

Reports from Belgrade say a number of Western countries have agreed to put up tens-of-millions of dollars to underwrite Belgrade's membership, because Yugoslavia at the moment has inadequate financial reserves.

After the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, the current Yugoslav Federation -- comprising the republics of Serbia and Montenegro -- did not join the IMF.

The former republic owes the IMF about one-hundred-and-twenty-eight million dollars.
