Sanchez Vicario takes French Open title

Monica Seles embraces rival Arantxa Sanchez Vicario after the Spaniard's victory

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario has won the French Open for the third time beating Monica Seles 7-6, 0-6, 6-2.

The 1989 and 1994 champion completed her victory in 1hr 52mins.

Seles, a winner here in 1990, 1991 and 1994 and playing in her first tournament since the death of her father last month, had beaten world number-one Martina Hingis in the semi-finals.

It was only the third time Sanchez Vicario had beaten Seles in 17 encounters.

It was her first appearance in a Grand Slam final since being runner-up at Wimbledon in 1996.

The result means that Sanchez Vicario will be fourth and Seles fifth when the new WTA rankings are published Monday.

Speaking after the match Sanchez Vicario said: "I can't express what I feel right now.

"It was a very difficult match, filled with emotion."

Seles, who had recaptured her old form so soon after her father's death, was clearly the emotional favourite. Sanchez Vicario mentioned the death while accepting her trophy, saying: "I'm so sorry I beat you. I don't think you are the one who deserved to lose."
