Student clashes in Nepal
Several people have been injured in Nepal, in clashes between students and police in the eastern town of Biratnagar. The students were demanding police action against a bus conductor who was accused of manhandling one of the students. Stones were thrown and vehicles damaged before police first lathi baton charged the students, then reportedly opened fire. The Nepalese students said thirty of their colleagues had been injured; the police said about a dozen officers were hurt. Correspondents say the situation in Biratnagar remains tense, but talks have been held between student leaders and the authorities in an attempt to defuse the situation.
