Liberians protest over UN report

Several hundred people have taken part in a protest march in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, against proposed United Nations sanctions on the country's diamond exports.

Their action follows publication on Tuesday of a report by a UN panel accusing President Charles Taylor of complicity in the arms-for-diamonds trade with Sierra Leone's rebel Revolutionary United Front or RUF.

The report proposed a complete embargo on all diamonds from Liberia, as well as the grounding of all Liberian-registered airlines and a travel ban on Liberian officials.

The UN Security Council is to consider the report today.

Britain and the United States have indicated they may adopt measures against Liberia.
