Drugs worth £2.4m seized by police

Heroin worth £1m was found in the first seizure made by police

Strathclyde Police have seized drugs worth an estimated £2.4m and arrested four men in a series of operations.

The combined seizures are the biggest haul the force has made so far this year.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on Friday following the alleged discovery of £1m worth of heroin in his car on the M74 near Abington in Lanarkshire.

Cannabis resin

Hours later a 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with a second seizure of drugs in Lanarkshire.

Officers stopped two transit vans travelling north on the A702 in the Biggar area which allegedly contained £1m of cannabis resin.

Two men aged 46 and 36 were arrested later following the alleged discovery of cocaine, amphetamine sulphate and temazepan in premises in the Garthamlock area of Glasgow. The drugs were worth £390,000.

A 46-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman have also been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with the drugs bust.

Police commitment

A court date has not been set for them. The four other men are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Drug squad Detective Superintendent Bob Lauder said: "These combined seizures are the biggest this year in Strathclyde.

"They demonstrate the continuing commitment by Strathclyde Police and officers in tackling the drugs trade."
