Liberians protest over UN report
Several hundred people have taken part in a protest march in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, against proposed United Nations sanctions on the country's diamond exports. Their action follows publication on Tuesday of a UN report accusing President Charles Taylor of complicity in the arms-for-diamonds trade with Sierra Leone's rebel Revolutionary United Front or RUF. The report proposed a complete embargo on all diamonds from Liberia, as well as the grounding of all Liberian-registered airlines and a travel ban on Liberian officials. The UN Security Council is to consider the report today. Britain and the United States have indicated they may adopt measures against Liberia. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
