Togo presidential campaign begins

The campaign for presidential elections in Togo, due to be held on June 21, has begun with one of the six registered candidates expressing concern over the way the poll is organised.

In a letter to the National Elections Commission, Leopond Messan Gnininvi of the African People's Convention for Democracy, said that the distribution of voter cards had not begun anywhere and that the list of polling stations remained unknown.

President Gnassingbe Eyadema, who has ruled Togo since 1967 when he seized power in a military coup, is standing for another five-year term.

He won a presidential election five years ago - boycotted by the opposition - with more than 90% of the vote.
