Saturday, June 6, 1998 Published at 12:49 GMT 13:49 UK Sport: Football Sheringham sorry - stays in side Teddy Sheringham: pictured drinking and smoking at 6.45am England striker Teddy Sheringham will keep his place in the World Cup squad following newspaper reports about him nightclubbing in Portugal.
"I accept there was a lack or professionalism by me in not realising how my actions were likely to be interpreted," said Sheringham. "I've been proud to be a professional footballer for 15 years. I've played 33 times for England and been very proud to do so. I care about what I do and I want to continue playing for England."
"I am very disappointed with what he did, that goes without saying. But the lad has apologised," said Hoddle. Anderton denial The Football Association has, meanwhile, move quickly to quash reports that winger Darren Anderton was involved in a fight in Bournemouth earlier this week. The Sun newspaper claims Anderton was seen out drinking with friends before a brawl broke out in the early hours of the morning. But in a statement, read by FA Director of Public Affairs David Davies, Anderton insisted he had not been involved in any fight and had not been drunk. "He had been out for dinner with family and friends where he drank a glass of wine. He later bought drinks for his friends and had a couple of beers. Glenn Hoddle, the England coach, has accepted Darren Anderton's version of events." Press coverage The Sheringham and Anderton stories followed hot on the heels of reports about Paul Gascoigne going out on the town with showbiz friends Rod Stewart, Chris Evans and Danny Baker. Gascoigne was eventually left out of England's 22 and Hoddle insists Sheringham has not been given preferential treatment. He said: "This is unlike the Paul Gascoigne case. I'm sure people will say they are being treated differently but with Paul it wasn't a case of a drinking situation, but about his fitness." Hoddle must be hoping his side are given an easier ride by the tabloid media as they complete their final preparations for France 98.
