Woodward pathologist reported to have quit

The American pathologist whose evidence originally helped convict the British au pair Louise Woodward of murder, has resigned after it was found that he failed to carry out a proper examination in another case.

The Massachussets Bar Association is calling for a review of all the criminal cases he's handled, including that of Louise Woodward.

Dr Gerald Feigin carried out the autopsy on the baby, Matthew Eappen, who the British au pair was convicted of killing.

The Boston Globe newspaper says he resigned over the handling of an examination of a 34-year-old man, David McHugh.

A 15-year-old teenager was charged with David McHugh's manslaughter, but a senior pathologist has now ruled the victim died because of a chronic heart problem.

The defence in that case is now demanding the prosecution drops all charges.

And the Massachussets Bar Association wants a review of all criminal cases handled by Dr Gerald Feigin, including Louise Woodward's.

Dr Feigin has so far declined to comment.

The outcome of Louise Woodward's appeal is expected in the next few weeks.
