A United Nations report says sexual abuse and ill treatment at home forces many girls into prostitution in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The report has been published by the United Nations Women's Fund to mark the fifth anniversary of the Charter on Women's Rights.

It says research among young prostitutes in the region has shown almost half were sexually abused by a member of their families.
