Khmer Rouge headquarters formally returns to government control

The former Khmer Rouge military headquarters at Anlong Veng is beingreintegrated into Cambodian government territory at an official ceremony today.

The guerrillas based there are due to exchange their rebel uniforms for regulation army issue.

The BBC correspondent in Phnom Penh says the ceremony will symbolise the government's control over the country in the run-up to elections in July.

During the last elections five years ago, the Khmer Rouge tried to stop people in its territory voting.

This time, people in Anlong Veng should be able to do so, although our correspondent says no arrangements are in place yet, either for the townspeople or the thousands who fled to refugee camps in neighbouring Thailand during the government offensive in March.
