Security Council briefed on Iraqi weapons

The chief United Nations weapons inspector, Richard Butler, has outlined to the Security Council the disarmament steps that Iraq still has to take before sanctions can be lifted.

The list was presented to the Council on the second day of a briefing, during which Mr Butler gave evidence alleging that Iraq is still concealing information about its weapons programmes.

The American ambassador to the UN, Bill Richardson, said it was clear that Iraq was still deceiving the UN over its weapons - a view supported by Britain.

But the BBC UN correspondent says Russia, France and China remain sympathetic to Iraq and its demand for sanctions to be lifted.

Mr Butler is due to visit Baghdad next week to outline the disarmament measures to Iraqi officials.

Earlier this week, senior Iraqi officials told an informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council that it has no more weapons, or documents relating to them.
