Rugby league chief suspended

The British Amateur Rugby League Association has suspended its long-serving administrator Maurice Oldroyd pending an investigation into "internal matters."

A statement issued by BARLA said: "Due to a number of internal matters which have come to light, the BARLA staff disciplinary sub-committee, acting on behalf of the BARLA board of management, has decided to suspend Maurice Oldroyd from his duties as chief executive until such time as these matters can be fully investigated."

No further explanation has been given.

Oldroyd, a former player and referee, was assistant secretary when the association was formed 25 years ago and became its first full-time national administrator.

He has overseen the rapid growth of amateur rugby league players and clubs.
