Hundreds die in Indian heat wave

Officials in the eastern Indian state of Orissa say more than seven hundred people have died so far due to an intense heat wave sweeping through the state.

Unofficial figures say the number of dead is nearer one thousand.

Local officials have asked people to remain indoors during the day and ordered districts to make drinking water available in busy areas.

Special wards have been set up in hospitals to deal with victims of the heat.

Normal life in Orissa is said to have been completely disrupted, with shops remaining closed for most of the day.

Working hours in offices have also been cut down by half.
