Trouble flares again after girl's murder

Omagh is a predominantly Protestant town but the violence was free of sectarian overtones

A Northern Ireland housing estate close to where the dismembered body of a teenage girl was found at the weekend has seen further disturbances.

Two houses were petrol-bombed and an oil tank was set on fire on Wednesday night on the Mullaghmore estate in Omagh, County Tyrone.

Police in riot gear were drafted in to deal with a mob of youths. They recovered a number of Molotov cocktails.

The body of Sylvia Fleming, 17, was discovered in the foundations of a partially built house in the town on Saturday. She had been missing since the beginning of April.

Plea to end violence

Trouble first broke out on Tuesday night near the home of a 14-year-old girl charged in connection with the murder. Three other people, including a 15-year-old youth, have also been charged in connection with the murder.

One policeman escaped serious injury after being hit by a petrol bomb.

Three arrests were made after Tuesday night's trouble and a man appeared in court on Wednesday and was fined £100 after admitting riotous behaviour.

The violence resumed on Wednesday night despite a plea from the murdered girl's family for it to stop.

George Fleming, Sylvia's uncle, said: "Please desist, because you are certainly not doing anything to help the Fleming family."
