General strike cripples Indian Kashmir

A general strike called by Muslim separatists has disrupted everyday life in Indian Kashmir today.

A BBC correspondent says schools, shops and banks are closed and transport has been affected.

The organisers are demanding international mediation in the dispute between India and Pakistan over who should govern Kashmir.

The protest coincides with today's meeting in Geneva of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the recent nuclear tests by India and Pakistan.

The Kashmir issue is expected to be on the agenda.
