Crash kills 11 Indonesian officials



A helicopter of the Indonesian army has crashed into a mountain in a remote district of East Timor, killing 11 senior officers who were on board.

The chief of staff of the region said the accident occurred at 10:25 a.m. (0225 GMT) in Liaruka in the Viqueque district, in rain and poor visibility.

He said the group had been on a working visit to the area, when their helicopter plunged into the ground and burst into flames when its tail rotor caught a tree just after takeoff.

Among the dead were the top army commanders for the region, where government forces are fighting separatist guerrillas.

They wer one of Indonesia's regional commanders, Major-General Yudomo, and the commander of forces on East Timor, Colonel Slamet Sidabutar.

One man survived the crash with serious injuries.

East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, was invaded by Indonesia in 1975 and annexed in 1976 after heavy fighting.

Military sources say that between 8,000 and 10,000 Indonesian troops are stationed there.
